Our Board consists of only local professionals and business owners who voluntarily commit their time and input into governing our hospice affairs - entirely free of charge.

Hermie Wentzel (Chairman) - Portfolio: Fundraising
Hermie is a born and bred 'Kaapenaar' and studied law becoming a qualified and registered attorney in 1985. Re-locating to Robertson with his wife - also a lawyer - in 2005, he continues to provide his legal services to both new local clients and his existing long-standing ones. Hermie is an avid supporter of Breede River Hospice providing his invaluable legal expertise entirely for free and was elected as Chairman in 2015.
Penny Retief (Vice-Chairperson) - Portfolio: Chairperson
Penny matriculated from Jan van Riebeeck High in 1965, completed her Primary teacher certificate in 1967 at Denneoord teachers training college as well as a lower diploma in librarianship in 1968 at Stellenbosch University. Penny served as the president of the Robertson Horticultural society from 1977 until 1982 and is currently the co-owner of the well known Van Loveren Wine Estate. Serving as a board member of Breede River Hospice since June 2006, was elected as Chairperson in 2011 and served in this position till 2015.
San-Mari Burger - Portfolio: Risk, Health & Safety, Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting and Volunteers.
San-Mari matriculated from DF Malherbe High School in Port Elizabeth and completed the following courses; HIV Management systems implementation of SANS, Certificate of Competency in Industrial Audiometry and Hearing Assessments, HIV/AIDS Basic Counseling Skills programme, Effective fatigue management for optimizing shift work and rostering in the workplace, Certificate in Safety, Health, Environment & Quality, First Aid Level 3, COIDA training, Train the trainer – Maccausvlei, Risk Assessment Techniques – Risk management South Africa, Course in Mine, Health and Safety Act AiC training, Applied Ergonomics Course Ergotech, Silver Medal First Aid Redd Cross society and annually does Physiotherapy Continuous Professional development courses San-Mari currently manages a private physiotherapy aractice and a occupational health consultancy practice.
Carin Conradie - Portfolio: Patient Care
Carin matriculated from Robertson High in 1968, completed her B-Grade in Nursing in 1973 and went on to attain a diploma in midwifery at Tygerberg Hospital as well as a diploma in psychiatric nursing at Stikland Hospital. Carin is currently the owner of Ashton Nursery.
Andrew Lucas - Portfolio: Human Resources
Andrew matriculated from Bergrivier High School, completed his professional teaching diploma at Hewat teacher’s college in 1977. In 1999 he completed his B Tech in teaching management at Cape Technikon and received his advanced certificate in education for management and leadership at UCT in 2009. Andrew is currently the principle of Vergesig Primary School.
Rowan Smith - Portfolio: Finance
He matriculated from Langeberg Secondary School, completed his B Compt through Unisa and did courses in Pastel certified installer, Pastel BIC workshop, Pastel Roadshows and Cqs Case ware campaign. He is currently the owner of his own company called 4 xR Computerized Accounting Solutions.
Gert Lubbe - Portfolio: Resource Development (Fundraising)
Matriculated from Paarl Gymnasium in 1966 and is currently the owner of the Montagu Country Hotel. He was the Chairperson of the Stellenbosch Tourism organisation, a councilor for the Stellenbosch Municipality and a member of the Cape Route Unlimited Committee.
Pieter van Tonder - Portfolio: Finance
He matriculated from Central High in Beaufort West in 1992 and completed his B Accounting and Honours at the University of Stellenbosch in 1995 and 1996. He became a qualified chartered accountant in 2000 and completed his M.Comm (South African & Internation Tax) at the Northwest University in 2005. He is currently working at Price Waterhouse Coopers in Robertson and has experience in accounting, audit, business management and planning secretarial (statutory) and tax direct. He also does indirect and regional related services to individuals, closed corporations, small/medium private companies, cooperatives, trusts and estates.
Dr. Shane Cornelius - Portfolio: Patient Care, CPL
He is a qualified medical doctor who graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1995 majoring in advanced cardiac, pediatric and trauma life support courses. He has experience as a resident medical officer in surgery and orthopedics at Hospital Kent (UK), forensic medical examiner (police surgeon Kent), medical officer ship doctor on the Norwegian cruise lines and as a medical emergency registrant at the Groot Schuur Hospital. He is currently the medical doctor in Ashton.

Shaun is local resident practising law throughout the region.

Jane Phillips - General Manager
Jane matriculated from Union High in Graaff Reinet, completed her diploma in general nursing and midwifery from Somerset Hospital and did a short course in palliative care at St Luke’s Hospice. She has experience as a general ward sister at the Somerset Hospital, general manager at Avalon Bonnievale Hotel and started up her own nursing institution called Jane’s Nursing Care in 1989. She started at the Breede River Hospice in 1999 as a community nursing sister and was promoted to patient care manager in 2005. In 2009 she was finally promoted to the position of General Manager
Sr. Myrtle Le Roux - Patient Care Manager
She has experience as a professional nurse with midwifery and palliative care; management development for NGO’s and occupational health. She was a hospice nurse and senior sister for 3 years before becoming the Patient Care Manager in 2009.
Dr. Sonia van der Spuy - Medical Doctor
She has a MBChB and Dip Pal Med. She is currently our Medical Doctor with a Palliative Care Diploma
Joa van Kuijk - Training Manager
She completed matric at Outeniqua Highschool in George, did a diploma course in Medical Secretarial work at Tygerberg College and Beauty Technology in Cape Town. She then went on to complete her Bachelors in Ministry and Honours in Theology in 2006. She also completed various counselling courses. She is currently a third year Bachelor in Social Work student at UNISA.
She has done spiritual and bereavement counselling at Breederiver Hospice for 6 years and is involved in training at various sites.
She is certified in the following:
• Certificate in pastoral counselling completed in 2003 at Theologos, Theology School.

• Diploma in Ministry, Cum laude
• Diploma in Leadership, Cum laude

Sandy Struckmeyer - Finance Manager
She matriculated from Ixopo High School in 1981, completed a Nature Conservator diploma at Pretoria Technicon but did not stay in this field. She branched out to bookkeeping in 1994 while living in Namibia and has continued in this line since. She qualified as a Pastel trainer while running Creative Minds in Robertson. She currently works for Hospice full-time as Finance Manager.
Sr. Jacqui Hannabuss - Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting (MER) Manager
She qualified as a professional nurse in 1969 and went on to midwifery in 1971 and operating theater technique in 1972. She spent many years as a theater sister in the state hospitals, during which time she completed various Cape Provincial Administration (CPA) management courses and was elected to the CPA Medical Consumable Action Team and the Tender Board. She assisted the CPA Infection Control with the development of HIV/AIDS and Haemorrhagic Fever policy and procedures. She was a founder member of the Western Cape Orthopaedic Nurses Society. In 1995 she was headhunted by the private sector when Managed Health came into being and dealt with medical aids until 2001. She again was headhunted by a new medical aid administration company who opened their doors with 8 staff members and when she retired and moved to Bonnievale in 2006, she left behind 165 staff members. Retirement lasted a year, when Breede River Hospice enticed her out of retirement as a relief sister, one thing led to another and she is currently the MER Manager.
